360 is a political directory of contemporary groups, individuals, and events involved in self-determination in some way (e.g., advocating for sovereignty, forestalling liberation, working against Indian Country, etc.). This online directory is provided for educational purposes, and includes names of those no longer with us yet whose work continues to sustain all of us.
Send suggestions, corrections, and updates to julia<dot>goodfox<at>gmail<dot>com. Because I work on this directory and the Last Woman blog in my spare time, please be good-natured about the delays in updating this resource.
ONLINE MEDIA FRIENDS
Although there are those individuals who seek to stifle dialogue, dissent, and debate by claiming the existence of a mythic “good Indians are quiet and do as they are told” culture, freedom of the press is an essential tool for the protection of the integrity of Self-Determination. Below are recommended individuals and media sites (in possession of varying degrees of journalistic independence) that provide reportage of events involving Indian Country.
- Brenda Norrell
- Cultural Survival
- Indian Country Today
- Indianz
- Kevin Abourezk
- Mary Pierpoint
- NAJA (Native American Journalists Association)
- Native Ameican Times is published weekly out of Tahlequah (the capital of the Cherokee Nation). According to their website, Native Times is independently-owned and so “are not influenced by tribes, the federal government or gaming revenue of any kind. We are proud to be one of America’s only independent Indian news sources.”
- Reznet
- Rob Capriccioso
- Turtle Talk is not a media site. However, this blog for the Indigenous Law and Policy Center at Michigan State University College of Law is one of the best resources I have seen on the legal components of Self-Determination. They provide daily updates on cases and events. Check out their page of links to every U.S. Supreme Court case involving federal Indian law in the modern era (1959 to present).
- And take a look at these articles regarding media and Indian Country:
- “College Censorship” 2007 report on Tribal College newspapers
- “Covering Indian Country” by John Feffer (27 May 2006)
